The Concept of Mental Health

This thread will be used to discuss the meaning of mental health, it's merits and deficiencies as a concept, and alternative conceptualizations.

In his newest book, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture, Gabor Maté, explores the paradox of rising mental and physical health issues in the face of apparently advancing Western healthcare systems.

As Jiddu Krishnamurti said, "it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society;" Maté also points out that what our society considers "normal" is a false, misguided, and neglectful way of understanding how our modern lifestyle, trauma, and other stressors are wreaking havoc on our minds and bodies. Here is a video of Maté discussing some of the themes from the book.
