Threatened, Rare, and Endangered Herbs

This thread will be used to keep a list of threatened, rare, and endangered herbs.

This list will not be exhaustive as there may be more than 15,000 medically active plant species at risk for extinction (see https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/publications/papers/Medicinal_Plants_042008_lores.pdf) and only a small percentage of plants have been thoroughly explored for potential medicinal properties.

Costus, Indian costus, Kushta [Dolomiaea costus (previously Saussurea costus), Saussurea lappa]

This thistle plant that is usually found at high elevations is native to South Asia and China is critically endangered.

Goldenseal (Hydrastatis canadensis)

This perennial herb in the buttercup family native to North America. This plant is considered of special concern, vulnerable, or threatened depending on the geographic area.
